With diseases like Alzheimer’s affecting women more frequently, more men are providing care in the home. According to two studies by the Alzheimer’s Association and National Alliance for Caregiving, “Almost twice as many men now are taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, up to almost 40 percent of caregivers from 19 percent just 15 years ago.”
This rising trend may be, according to experts, because more women over 65 have Alzheimer’s disease than men. Also, with families scattered across the country, longer life expectancy, and changing ideas about gender roles, more men are providing care after stepping up for an aging loved one.
