co-housingThe real estate world is full of emerging housing trends, but could co-housing for seniors be the next big one? The Cohousing Association of the United States describes cohousing as, “A type of intentional, collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their neighborhoods. Cohousing provides the privacy we are accustomed to within the community we seek.” Over the past several years, communal living has been growing in popularity and it may be a trend that can help effectively accommodate our rapidly aging population.

Today’s baby boomers aren’t considering moving away to states like Florida or Arizona upon retirement like their parents before them. Instead, they would rather continue living within their home communities, and co-housing environments could provide today’s seniors with the independence they desire along with the feeling of a close community that would allow them to remain socially active and engaged.
