Pressure sores are a common problem in hospitals around the world as patients are often too ill to get out of bed, and older people are at a heightened risk because of poor circulation. However, a new electrifying invention may put an end to pressure sores. Researchers at the University of Calgary have made a stimulating discovery in the continued attempt to prevent pressure sores in immobilized patients. It’s called Smart-e-Pants, electric underwear that electrically stimulates the buttock muscles of patients, mimicking fidgeting and preventing the development of sores that arise when a person is stuck in one position for too long. Researchers hope that these pants will help reduce the incidence and cost of treating bed sores, also known as pressure ulcers.
