It can be a good idea to open up a dialogue with the seniors in your life about protecting themselves. Many won’t even understand or have heard of the concept of elder abuse. Helping them be aware and expressive of their wishes will help them protect themselves. Make sure their financial and legal affairs are in order. If they aren’t, enlist professional help to get them in order, with the assistance of a trusted friend or relative if necessary.

Encourage an open dialogue about their living situation and care. If seniors are unhappy with the care they’re receiving, whether it’s in their own home or in a care facility, they should speak up. By letting them know it is ok to do so, you may be surprised what you hear.
